Legge Carpets LTD - Sale of Christopher's Private Collection, Part 1 - 9th September 2026
The first tranche of Christopher's private collection of 50+ years is coming up for auction at Mallams, Oxford, on 9 September. An interesting event for carpet and textile lovers
Christopher Legge has been a stalwart of the carpet trade in the UK, making a name for himself as a specialist in tribal weavings from Iran and Turkmenistan and selling to private clients as well as institutions and museums. Having started in his first small shop in Witney in 1974, and now in their Oxford gallery in Summertown, this has been a long journey of over 50 years, which was celebrated in their major exhibition in October 2024 titled “50 Years – Along the Way”.
The pieces in this sale are part 1 of this collection which has grown close to Christopher’s heart. He hopes they will find new homes where they will be appreciated for what they are: manifestations of a different time and culture, and objects of timeless textile beauty.

Pictured below: No 1 is an Uzbek embroidered belt with knife sheaths and pouch and silk ikat lining (lot 105).Very similar and of equal quality to the one in the fantastic Usbekistan exhibition at the Lindenmuseum in Stuttgart in 1995.
