Alex Puddy runs Architectural Heritage in Gloucestershire and is also chair and director of The Cotswolds Art and Antiques Dealers Association (CADA).

Question 1) How did you get your start? 
- I was born into a dealing family and so you could pick any date - for me though it was when I stood my first (June) Olympia aged 23 and made my very first sale, a Scottish multifaceted sundial, to Axel Vervoordt who, magically, was always in before the doors were open!

Question 2) You are also the head of CADA. What have you done to support your members this year?
- Working with my committee we have offered our (not increased) subscription of £400 + VAT to be paid in instalments,
providing adverts at no cost to them as in the ATG this week (see p42-44), brilliant PR from Gail McGuffie and constant support to promote CADA's sole reason for being, which is to drive sales to our members.

Question 3) What challenges are facing the trade in the coming months?
- There are a few! For us at the CADA it was the need to postpone our fair, which will now be held in October 2021 at our new venue in the museum galleries of Compton Verney.

Question 4) Who do you admire in the trade? 
- There are too many great dealers past and present. However, if pushed I would say the Clarke Brothers (Sean and Simon) of Christopher Clarke Antiques in Stow-on-the-Wold - the town incidentally where the CADA first started over 40 years ago.

Question 5) Real ale or espresso martini?
- Before it would probably have been both but now I would prefer to toast the CADA with a crisp white from the Loire.

The Cotswolds Art and Antiques Dealers Association (CADA) is taking to Instagram to give its members a boost before the festive season. With the new lockdown, Christmas shopping might be more challenging than usual this year. However, CADA is this month devoting its Instagram page to ideal Christmas buys and gift suggestions from members.

Among the featured items are those with specific Christmas themes, such as a 1763 sampler from Legge Carpets which depicts a biblical scene of Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus. Trinity House Paintings offers a selection of wintery paintings by artists such as Kyffin Williams. Other highlights objects include those that might appeal as gifts, such a George Ill tea caddy from Freshfords Fine Antiques.

"Our Instagram account also shares and celebrates images taken in the area, which may be helpful when planning a trip here," says CADA head Alex Puddy (also see 5 Questions left. "We look forward to providing a warm welcome to visitors when it is safe. In the meantime, we continue to help people online and over the telephone."

CADA Takes To Instagram For Xmas 

The Cotswolds Art and Antique Dealers' Association (CADA) Fair, Woodstock

Blenheim Palace is the majestic backdrop for the eighth CADA fair this month, which will include some of the country's leader dealers showcasing their finest stock. The prestigious event, from February 21-24 - two months earlier than previous years - is the only antiques fair to take place at the palace, which is home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.

The duke's sister is Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, patron of both the association and fair. New exhibitors this year include 18th-century English furniture specialists Alderson Antiques and J. H. Bourdon-Smith who will present antique and modern silver from the 16th century to the present day.

New CADA member and 20th-century modern art dealer Dantzig will showcase works on paper, including original prints from Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse. All works are for sale, with prices ranging from £100 to more than £100,000 Fair director Catherine Hunt, said: "The earlier date of February puts us in line with the other prestigious fairs this month and in March. Being such a fantastic venue, Blenheim is a great destination for the end of February and the start of Spring."

The Cotswold Art & Antique Dealers' Association Art & Antiques Fair - Blenheim Palace (21st - 24th April 2016)

As far as venues go, Blenheim Palace is about as picturesque as they get and four years ago The Cotswolds Art & Antiques Dealers' Association (CADA) were able to secure it as the site of their annual fair. The 2015 event runs from April 16-19, as usual in The Orangery overlooking the formal gardens. It's not a huge space and so this popular event is compact, and this year the 24 CADA member exhibitors will be joined by five guest dealers who are all members of BADA,

All familiar names, they number Peter Bunting Antiques with oak furniture, early portraits and tapestries; silver specialist Mary Cooke Antiques; Joanna Booth, who brings early sculpture, tapestries and Old Master Drawings; historic medal dealer Timothy Millett and Cynthia Walmsley, a specialist in portrait miniatures. One CADA member also does the fair for the first time: Delomone & Son, with 18th and 19th century glass and porcelain.

A visit also provides a final chance to see the much-lauded Ai Weiwei at Blenheim Palace, now extended due to popular demand until April 26 The exhibition opened in October 2014 alongside the launch of the new Blenheim Art Foundation, which will bring a series of shows of the work of Contemporary artists to the palace. It includes more than 50 artworks by the Chinese artist, peppered around the palace and formal gardens.

The Cotswold Art & Antique Dealers' Association Art & Antiques Fair - Blenheim Palace (3rd - 6th April 2014)

THE sun finally shone for the opening of the second Cotswolds Art & Antiques Dealers' Association Art and Antiques Fair at Blenheim Palace.

Organised by CADA chairman and pottery dealer John Howard and his team, the fact that this is a fair run by dealers for dealers once again proved popular with exhibitors and visitor numbers were almost sustained from last year at 4000 over the four days from April 18-21, down a little from 4500 over the three-day run last year. But then organisers say, as a general rule of thumb, the first fair is busier than the second.

Sales up to £10,000 were good (there is, unsurprisingly, a five-figure ceiling for sales here), although buyers once again were taking their time to decide and quite a few deals took place after the fair. Hampton Antiques, Stuart Boyd, Gateway Antiques, Kit Alderson and Sarah Colegrave had particularly strong sales.

"London comes to the Cotswolds" was apparently a phrase frequently heard around the event and John was pleased with the outcome of this second fixture: "It proved it wasn't a one-off event and the whole fair felt more integrated as a unit this year."

So far, all exhibitors have said they will rebook for next year's event, which will take place again at Blenheim in April - exact date to be confirmed.

AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS 

The CADA Fair at Blenheim Palace,

20th - 22nd April 2012

The inaugural Cotswold Art & Antique Dealers' Association Fair at Blenheim Palace ticked every box: the gate was phenomenal with a head count of 4,500 visitors over the weekend, the venue was spectacular with the added bonus of the opportunity to enjoy the Palace grounds and sales were robust with Montpellier Clocks, Catherine Hunt Oriental Ceramics, Jeannette Hayhurst and Hampton Antiques experiencing an exceptional fair.

John Howard, Chairman of CADA, is delighted with the outcome saying, 'CADA has always prided itself on having the highest number of quality art and antique dealers outside London and the fair has conclusively proved this to be so. The knock-on effect is that the CADA website has been inundated with hits and the data-base has increased 10-fold'.

Some of the impressive sales over the weekend included Montpellier Clocks of Cheltenham selling an 18th century ebony bracket clock by Daniel Delander for £55,000 to a new client; the Titian Gallery of Stow on the Wold sold an oil painting of Prince Rupert directly from the page in Country Life before the fair opened for £16,500 as well as a number of good sales of 18th and 19th century oils over the weekend followed by a post fair sale this week; Hampton Antiques were consistently busy and 95% of their sales were to new clients. Among their sales was a tea caddy celebrating the Industrial Revolution for £3,500. Architectural Heritage sold an early 20th century bronze fountain of a child with a frog for £10,000 to a client celebrating a special anniversary; W R Harvey & Co (Antiques) Ltd sold a Chippendale period carved giltwood oval mirror for £10,000. Witney Antiques sold an interesting pair of needleworks by sisters from the early 19th century in the region of £5,000.

This was my best provincial fair for years and the Saturday was my best day ever outside London' says Jeannette Hayhurst. Amongst her many sales was a rock crystal engraved jar and cover designed by Joseph Keller for Stevens & Williams, c1885. Ilona Johnson-Gibbs from The Titian Gallery said, During the day it was necessary to control numbers coming into the fair and we had up to twenty people on the stand at one time'.

Gateway Antiques, appearing at an antiques fair for the very first time, were very pleased with the sales of furniture and their Burford shop also benefitted from people having seen their stand at the fair.

The fair attracted the 'quintessential Cotswold set' and one happy visitor said, This is an absolutely splendid venue, there is an excellent mix of dealers, a very high standard throughout and a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. Visitors came from as far away as Wales, London, Kent, Cheshire and Leicestershire as well as a couple flying in from the States.

Celebrities seen at the fair included Nigel Farage MP, Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Peter Moores and the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.

The date for next year's fair is 9th - 14th April 2013. All the dealers have already rebooked their stands.
