The centre is painted with an artemisia leaf and scroll case tied up with ribbons , symbols associated with the scholar, but one enjoyed in Europe as a design.
The sides are painted with Taotie mask and mask shaped panels shaped panels of fruit and flowers. Taotie mask heads are found as sculptures on the sides of temples in the far east and are associated with warding off gluttony
