Sir Henry Oxenden (1549-1623)
Oil on oak panel.
In a very fine carved wood frame of approximately 1730.

The panel is inscribed, top right, “Sir Henry Oxenden Knighted 17th Febry: 1606 Son of Henry Oxenden Esq that built Dean Hous” There is a further inscription painted on the reverse of the panel.
A brass plate on the frame is inscribed “Sir Henry Oxenden Knt of Dene Kent b 1549 d 1623 m 1st Elizth d & heir of James Broker of Maydeken Kent & 2ndly Mary d & heir of Richard Theobolde of Seale Thanet Attr to Marc Ghaeraerdts 1561-1635”

Sir Henry Oxenden stands, three-quarter length, wearing a black cape over a black doublet with a white ruff and black hat, his right hand resting on the pommel of his sword.

Sir Henry Oxenden was the second son of William Oxenden of Wingham, Kent and his wife Elizabeth Young. He married twice: first in 1574 Mary Theobolde, daughter of Richard Theobolde of Seal, Kent and, secondly, in 1581 Elizabeth, daughter of James Broker of Maydeken, Kent. She bore him a son but died that same year, perhaps in childbirth. These dates are not certain as there are conflicting versions.

Sir Henry was knighted at Whitehall on 17th February, 1606.

Condition

Very good with little damage to the original paint. The panel has been slightly reduced in size along the right-hand side , probably in the 18th century.
