Description

Early 18th century Chinese blue and white porcelain lidded jar made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722) at the kilns at Jingdezhen for export to Europe.
Painted in bright cobalt blue to show the pattern often referred to as the 'Hundred Antiques' pattern. This pattern 'bai gu' usually consists of a number of items from : The Seven Treasures of Buddhism, Eight precious Things, Eight Symbols of the Daoist Immortals, Four Treasures of the Scholar and sometimes various animals. Whether the pattern was symbolic or purely decorative divides opinion amongst scholars.
The jar was for the western market where often this size of jar was used as a tea jar or later for decorative purposes.
The wooden replacement lid dates to the early 20th century as does the wooden stand. The measurement of 13cm in height does not include the stand or lid
