Leonard James Stroudley was born and lived in London. He studied at Clapham School of Art between 1923-27, and then at the Royal College of Art, 1927-30, his teachers included William Rothenstein and Allan Gwynne-Jones. He won a travelling scholarship to Italy, where he was inspired by the classical Italian painters, notably Giotto and Piero della Francesca. Initially a figure artist, he moving increasingly towards abstraction from the 1950s. Stroudley exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and elsewhere, having numerous one-man shows. Works by him are in the collections of Bradford, Brighton, Coventry and Rochdale.

The present drawing is a study for the artist’s oil portrait of his third wife, Gillian Thain. She was a painter and printer maker, having studied at St Martin’s School of Art, 1945-51. The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and national Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, hold examples of her work.
