Description

A French brass Travel Drum Clock with enamel dial.

The clock has a hanging ring to the top and adjustable feet which probably originally had a ball on top of the remaining pins. The white enamel face has Roman numerals with gradient lines inbetween. To wind the clock, the back has to be removed. The time can then also be adjusted and the speed regulated if it is running too fast or slow. The clock has a hinged leather travel case lined in red velvet, with an open face. The double ended key is set into the back of the case.

There is an oval stamp, to the clock's interior, noting VAP. Brevete S.C.D.C. The initials stand for Victor Athanase Pierret, a respected Parisen clock maker, who was innovative in his work. So much so that his will left money for an annual prize for a clock maker who came up with an original idea. Brevete S.C.D.C. translates to Patent without Government Guarantee. After 1844 in France, all objects which had some part of original patent design had to be stamped Brevete S.C.D.C. Pierret exported a lot of his clocks to England and did very well with his miniature skeleton alarm clocks at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He retired in 1865 and died in 1893. Circa 1865.
