The town of Bath was first established as a spa in AD 60 by the Romans, where they built baths and a temple on the surrounding hills in the valley of the Avon.

Bath was granted city status by Royal Charter in 1590 by Queen Elizabeth I.

It became a popular spa resort during the Georgian era, which led to a major expansion leaving a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture created from Bath stone.

The City of Bath was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987 and offers a variety of museums, theatres and other cultural and sporting venues which have helped to make it a major centre for tourism.
