‘Strike a Light’
Its Irons in the Fire part 2 |
 |
| A pair of Arts and Crafts Fire Dogs circa 1880 |
Our title ‘STRIKE A LIGHT’ is a reminder that in the past the only means in which to start a fire was by rubbing two sticks together or using a ‘strike a light’ (a horseshoe shaped piece of metal) and a flint. The hearth for cooking and heating, the candle, oil lamps and later the gas mantle all needed a flame before the household could go about its daily life.
Our exhibition will not only cover the social history but will have for sale many interesting and unusual items reflecting the hearth and home of past eras.
