Our title is taken from a term coined in the 17th & 18th centuries to describe the personal collections of gentlemen of learning who augmented their libraries with cabinets of treasures and curiosities both natural and man-made brought back from Europe or acquired from the explorers to the Americas, Africa, the Colonies and the East. These cabinets provoked a sense of wonder in the viewer and ultimately formed the core collections of the earliest libraries and museums.
The cabinet originally described a room rather than a piece of furniture and we have borrowed this interpretation to house our collection of 17th, 18th and 19th century furniture, paintings, objects and books. It is a collection that reflects our passion for all things fine, useful or curious and which is also in some part a legacy from an age when the natural and ancient worlds influenced style and design.
