Arthur Calame, also known as Jean-Baptiste Arthur Calame, was a Swiss painter and intaglio printmaker best known for his beautiful Mediterranean, Venetian, and Swiss landscapes.

In Vue d’une place de marché, Vico del Porto, Naples, Calame has captured the vibrancy, busyness and diversity of a Neapolitan market. Naples’ wide array of differing goods and people is on full display in this wonderful work. Peasants dominate the lower right foreground, distinct in their traditional dress, and surrounded by their goats and numerous baskets of vegetables for sale at their feet. In contrast, a local Neapolitan prepares street food for hungry buyers on his expensive stall, smart in his waistcoat and shirt. The peasants seem almost Moorish in their appearance, and combined with the abundance of the warm burnt orange tones reminds the viewer of the souks of Northern Africa, overloaded with sights, smells and sounds.

Great attention to detail has been paid, not just to the figures, but also to the buildings and architecture. The lions of the fountain seem to be almost alive in their energy whilst the play with light and shade on the buildings recreates the heat and bright light of a hot summer’s afternoon in Naples.
