Though Rubens personally etched only a single plate, he was very involved in printmaking, recognizing the potential for disseminating his designs to a wide public.
He employed several engravers to produce prints of his paintings and related drawings, obtaining his own publishing copyright (privilege) in 1619.

CHRISTOFFEL JEGHER (Antwerp 1596-1652) worked at the Plantin press.
From c1632-36 Jegher worked in close collaboration with Rubens to produce nine powerful woodcuts. These established Jegher's reputation as an engraver and after Rubens' death in 1640 Jegher bought the blocks and re-issued them under his own privilege.
