Description / Expertise

This striking and unusual sampler has great visual appeal and a strong sense of design. The deliberately limited colour palette of black, red and white give weight to the composition.

English. Early 18th Century.

Known as decalogue sampler. This form of work imitated the decalogue church boards inscribed with The Creed, The Ten Commandments or The Lords Prayer.
This fine example frames the text within three arched pillars, finely worked in chevron Florentine stitch and topped by winged cherubs.
