Description / Expertise

Original etching, 1924.
(Reference Walker 14, Man 15, Tassi 10, Cooke 16 iv/iv)
One of about 40 impressions in the final (published) state, the plate reduced by a few millimetres at the foot, with some additional work and with a second etched signature and the date in Roman numerals.
A fine impression on tissue-thin japan.
In his student etchings, before 'discovering' Samuel Palmer, Sutherland found inspiration in the work of Whistler, and as apparent here, in the etchings of Rembrandt.
