Description / Expertise

An unusually large decalogue sampler worked on unbleached linen with coloured silks and metallic thread. Moses and Aaron are placed in the conventional manner either side of two boards upon which are written verses from The Ten Commandments, above which cherubs appear out of clouds.
Samplers of this form were popular during the first half of the 18th century following the design of the painted wooden decalogue boards found in churches.
