Description / Expertise

A very fine early 19th Century portrait in oil paint with exceptional embroidered work.

The use of water colour with silk was a popular medium and commonly practised technique, but the use of oils in combination with needlework is quite unusual. This large portrait of a fashionably dressed young woman was probably commissioned from a professional artist. Subsequently it may well have been embroidered by sitter herself using rich floss silks.

Contined in the origional gilt frame.
