Description / Expertise

Colour mezzotint, based on the artist's painting of the subject in 1898.
Probably a study of the artist's wife Ingebord née Petersen, whom he married in 1892, and their son Jens.
From 1909 Ilsted's printmaking was focussed on mezzotint. He visited England, home of the 18th century mezzotint, in 1912 to study the technique. He built up a collection of English mezzotints. Most of his mezzotints are based on earlier paintings. He both engraved and printed them himself.
