Description / Expertise

A particularly fine and small mid 18th. Century Mahogany Chest of Drawers, the moulded rectangular top above a gilt tooled leather lined pull out brushing/writing slide and four full width graduated drawers retaining all the original handles and escutcheons, the whole raised on the original shaped bracket feet. The term "Bachelor's Chest" is used to describe a small chest of drawers where the double top is hinged and folds out forward to be supported on lopers pulling out from the main body of the chest. It is also nowadays used to describe a small Chest of Drawers where there is a pull out slide to the frieze between the top and the top drawer. The slide is often termed a "Brushing Slide" and is lined in baize cloth so clothes can be laid on it and brushed out to remove any dust etc. In a few examples and as in this case, the slide is lined in gilt tooled leather to use for writing at. In this chest, the leather appears to be the original Morocco in a dark green/black colour with a greek key border and gilt line. This is one of the most original chests it has been our delight to own for some time coming, as it does, with the original locks and keys as well.
