Description / Expertise
A single candle holder dating from the early 18th century. This early form of lighting consisted of a coiled steel spiral, containing a metal socket that held the candle. The socket allowed the candle height to be adjusted as the candle burned down. The metal spiral is set into a circular mound-shaped wooden base, possibly fruitwood or alder.
