Description / Expertise

The amboyna used to make this Chinese Export Toiletry Box immediately makes it stand out from those made in standard timbers. The wood has a rich colour and the burr and movement of the grain is very attractive. Added to this the brass edging has developed a dark patina which is highlighted through wear in places and offsets the glow of the amboyna. The box interior is made of huang huali and, as can be seen, there are numerous dividers and lidded compartments to take a variety of items from razors and scissors to jars. The mirror is hinged to the lid and has a hinged arm to the back to hold it at an angle. The box also has a plain drawer to the front and skeletal handles to the sides. It is good quality and well made as you would expect of a piece made by the Chinese for the Western market. Early 19th Century.
