Description / Expertise
Three Fold Wedged Campaign Desk
This mahogany slope is made to an unusual wedge shape and also has a far greater than standard depth. The lid has stay hinges to keep it upright as well as fittings to set it at seven different angles for use as a lectern, and a red leather wallet for papers. The desk tidy area is large with a pen tray, space for two inkwells and two large, lidded compartments. When the baised slope is opened for writing, the depth of the box from front to back is large at 26 inches. The slope has two deep secret drawers hidden by a removable facia, as might be expected. The wedge shape of the box, wider at the front than the back, has been done for more than simply looks. To make a box to such awkward angles takes a skilled cabinet maker and must have been done for a specific reason. It is possible that the box was made to fit into a specific case, wagon or another piece of furniture; the wedge shape holding it more securely. It might also suggest use on board ship. The box has skeletal handles to the sides and a simple incised line moulding. Early 19th century.
