Description / Expertise

Antique pottery jelly core or inner mold in creamware from the workshops of Josiah Wedgwood Staffordshire England.
The mold would have originally an outer utility cover in plain earthenware.
The jelly would set on the inner core and be brought to the dining table to be served from. These pieces must have made an impressive display as the decoration could have been seen through the jelly ( jello).
These rare pieces are collected today for their unusual and stylish form and wonderful hand painted decoration. There is also a strong interest from culinary and social history collectors.

IF THESE POTS COULD TALK EXHIBITION.
Jelly cores always create interest as very little is known about them. I am asked questions about these pieces more than any other item from my inventory of English Pottery. I always ask enquirers for their own guess as to what purpose they could be for....some answer for holding cheese or toast but the best one was,"as a pair they could be used for holding baguettes"!
It is very rare to fnd these cores with the original utiltyware outer and the last time I sold one was to an interior decorator in New York who stated he would actually use it every Christmas for his jello.
