Description / Expertise

This mahogany and brass campaign Washstand is of a standard design, produced by various makers. It dismantles by removing the nut finials, allowing the top shelf to be lifted off. The brass standards separating the top to middle shelves can then be unscrewed and the next shelf lifted off and so on. The same principle is seen on the majority of campaign shelves available and perhaps the simply yet practical design accounts for their popularity. Added to this, brass with mahogany or teak is always attractive to the eye. The washstand is a little different to most in that the top shelf has cut outs to take two dishes in addition to the wash bowl. It also has wooden galleries to the top and middle shelf as opposed to the more normal brass.
Late 19th century.
