Description / Expertise
Although a fairly standard straight grain walnut military chest, this one stands out for the Kane Patent handles to the drawers. They are brass ‘scoop’ handles that are set in to be relatively flat to the drawer fronts but have a decorative shaping to them. The form is quite different to most campaign handles which have a bale but they are just as effective in ensuring a flat front to the chest for ease of packing. We have seen this type of handle once before on a campaign cylinder bureau. It is possible that Gregory Kane of Dublin was the patentee but we cannot be sure. The chest splits to two halves and of course has removable feet. Late 19th Century.
