Description / Expertise

An English mahogany 8-day bracket clock with 3-pad top, signed on the engraved and silvered dial Robt. Wood London.

The clock has a twin fusee 5-pillar movement with a verge escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. The dial has a strike/silent lever in the arch and a date dial above 6 o’clock. All clock hands are of blued steel. The back of the clock movement is engraved all over with a vase, flowers and foliage.

The mahogany and mahogany veneered case has brass scale pattern frets to the sides, and a brass bound 3-pad top. The clock has brass edging to the front door, brass framing to the front glass and stands on brass bracket feet. The case is 16¾ inches high including the handle (14¾ inches without handle).

Robert Wood is recorded as working in Horse Shoe Alley, Moorfields, London from about 1785 until circa 1810.
